Is It Time to Declutter Your Life?

Posted by on

There's a Zen proverb that says, "Knowledge is learning something every day. Wisdom is letting go of something every day."

When it comes to downsizing, our ability to let go is imperative. We can’t take it all with us. Many times, it’s easier for someone who’s not attached to the stories and memories that we have tied to our personal items to provide perspective on what to keep and what to let go of, and that’s where the Caring Transitions team comes in. They pack what you’d like to move to a new smaller home, and either sell or donate the rest, making your or your loved one’s move a smooth process.

Successful aging is also a process of decluttering. It's doing less of what doesn't bring us joy and more of what does. We can start with our physical surroundings, even if we’re not making a move. You know that garage full of stuff you never use? Let it go. You know those out-of-style clothes in your closet that no longer fit? Let them go. We don’t have to give it all away, but we're old enough to know what does and does not bring us joy, and what we’ll never use again.

But it’s more than just decluttering our physical stuff. What about those things we do because that’s the way we’ve always done it? You know that 10K that hurts your knees to run? What if you walked it instead? You know that favorite food that now causes havoc with your stomach? What’s something new you could try instead?

And while we're letting go of things and habits that no longer serve us, what about emotions? Let’s let go of self-doubt and anger. Wouldn’t life be better without grudges and guilt and envy? What about jealousy, resentment, and regret? You know that desire to be somebody you're really not? It might be time to let go of the unrealistic expectations we have about ourselves and others. And you know those people who don't inspire, encourage, or support you? The ones who are always complaining? Let them go, too.

Just like it’s important to keep only what we want and need when we move into a smaller space, as we age and have less time ahead of us, we want to make sure we’re filling those minutes, hours, days, and years with activities, emotions, and people we enjoy. We want that time to count.

Let go of your attachment to anything that no longer brings value to your life and you'll be amazed at the space you create for the people, the places, and the things that do.
