Oakland County provides relocation, downsizing, and liquidation services to
individuals and families. Often our older clients have the need for private
duty home care services, whether they are staying in their homes or transitioning
into senior living. Private duty home care services can help our clients get
the assistance they need and give them the opportunity to live as independently
as possible.
It’s important for us to have a
strong referral network so if our clients need a resource or vendor, we can
connect them with a company that we know will care about their needs. Right at
Home of Grosse Pointe is one of these resources and we would like to introduce them
here, in order to educate you further about the services they provide for older
adults.
Belinda, you are the owner of a homecare company, why did you decide to
go into this line of work?
I actually worked alongside Right
at Home for years when I was a health care administrator. The doctors on my
team would visit retirement communities and private homes to see patients, we
often had the same clients/patients as Right at Home.
Of course, there
were a lot of homecare groups out there, but it was Right at Home that I
enjoyed working with the most as they were always so nice, my patients loved
the caregivers, my team members liked their staff and they proactively helped
me keep my patients out of the hospital. Their owner Jeff Welsh was also
someone I truly enjoyed working alongside. Teaming up with him to become a
co-owner of Right at Home Grosse Pointe was a no brainer.
Can you tell me something interesting or different about yourself?
I was born in Adelaide Australia,
grew up in Bjärnum Sweden and moved to the U.S. when I was 20. I wanted to
travel, which is how I ended up in the U.S. I’ve lived in Key West and Las
Vegas, but it’s Michigan that I really love. I also love to paint, have even
sold some paintings and created large wall murals, and on occasion I will
volunteer and draw caricatures in retirement communities. Drawing caricatures
of seniors is the most fun thing anyone can do!
So, what is your background?
My background has been in various
positions in healthcare. As the Administrator for a visiting physician group
with a patient average age of 90, I learned how to keep seniors from falling
and out of the hospital. We were on staff at hospitals, rehabs and visited our
patients in their private homes and retirement communities in the tri-county
area. I graduated Business and Administration school in Sweden.
Can you briefly explain
what Right at Home does?
We take care of clients in their private homes and in
retirement communities, we also staff independent living communities as their
in house private duty group. You can say that we enable our clients to continue
living independently and continue to do those things they’ve always enjoyed
doing. It’s all about maintaining a high quality of life and staying out of the
hospital.
Our team of amazing caregivers do a lot
for our clients: Respite Care, Home Health Aide, Hygiene, Dementia Care,
Medication Reminders, Companionship Care, and more.
Anything else?
I am extremely passionate about educating our local
community and the health care community about all the services available to
seniors and those with limited abilities. I especially want everyone to know
about all the amazing services available in your own home, many which are
covered by insurance! It breaks my heart when I explain services that are
available, and the family members start crying, because this information is
changing their life.
I have started a coalition called
Healthy Seniors that is now part of Healthy Grosse Pointe & Harper Woods.
Our goal is to educate our local residents and providers on options, services,
reduce medications, falls and hospitalizations and improve the quality of life
of our seniors.
